Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will dump the Ubuntu Software Center for GNOME Software - englishplaing

After a couple of of the most on the face of it uneventful Ubuntu releases in its history, Orthodox is devising a a few major changes to patch up Ubuntu 16.04 LTS for the hanker haul. Aside from disqualifying those reviled online search results, the next version of Ubuntu will also dump the Ubuntu Software Halfway and replace it with GNOME's Software application.

The Ubuntu Software Center has been neglected

This isn't vast news if you've been keeping track of the increasing deterioration of the Ubuntu Software Center. This summertime, I chronicled how Canonical was slowly letting the Ubuntu Software Focus on wither and die. The nonrecreational "app computer storage" side of it was axed with no warning to developers. Ubuntu MATE 15.10 already dropped the Software Focus for something better.

The Ubuntu Software Center is on its last legs.

The Software Center was great when it was released, offering a more user-palsy-walsy "app store"-like user interface for installing Linux software. But it has stagnated and is instead decelerate. Other applications—particularly GNOME's Software package app—have caught functioning. Ubuntu's developers haven't really been working much on the Ubuntu Package Center, after all. They've been working on the next-genesis app store for Unity 8, which works on Ubuntu for phones and will eventually get on the desktop with the converged Unity 8 desktop.

GNOME Software to the deliverance

If you've ever used Trilby—operating room just seen screenshots of it—you've probably seen GNOME's Software application in action. Fedora, a fairly GNOME-centric Linux distribution, was the first to adopt it.

This will give the time-honored Ace 7 desktop on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS a stable software concentrate that other people are working on and maintaining, freeing upward development clip. It's also to a greater extent modern font, and Ubuntu's developers feel information technology would be easier to add substantiate for those new container-like Snappy packages to Dwarf Package than to the old Ubuntu Software Center field.

Every bit Canonical's Bequeath Cooke said in a video noble Developer Desktop Architectural plan 16.04: "We are more confident in our ability to add support for Snaps to GNOME Software Center (set) than we are to Ubuntu Software Snapper. And and so, right now, information technology looks like we will comprise replacing [the Ubuntu Software Center] with GNOME Software package Centre with plugins to support Snaps, and the file away, and the ratings, and the comments from the Ubuntu Software Halfway."

This could bring Ubuntu some past nice features, too. For example, the GNOME Software application now provides an interface for installing UEFI firmware updates on modern PCs.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS also sees much Sir Thomas More tidying up, with the Brasero disc-burn app and Empathy present-messaging app being dumped from the default scheme. Both are tranquillise ready from the repositories if you want them, atomic number 3 are many alternatives. I've always favourite Pidgin to Empathy, myself.
